Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli claimed victory at the Monaco Grand Prix, securing his fifth consecutive win of the season.
The Monaco Grand Prix once again proved the old saying that, unless rain intervenes, the race is largely decided in qualifying. The weather remained clear throughout the weekend and had no impact on the race.
Championship leader Kimi Antonelli started from pole position after delivering a flawless qualifying performance on Saturday. Max Verstappen lined up alongside him on the front row. However, the four-time World Champion's race was over almost before it began. The Red Bull driver failed to get away from the grid at the start, dropping behind the entire field, before eventually retiring with a power unit issue.
Antonelli comfortably maintained the lead, while Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc emerged as his closest challengers. Further back, an intense battle unfolded between Isack Hadjar and George Russell. The Mercedes driver spent much of the race applying pressure, but the Frenchman successfully defended his position throughout.
The Monaco Grand Prix also featured a number of penalties, with Hamilton, Russell, Pierre Gasly, Oscar Piastri, Franco Colapinto, Sergio Pérez and Carlos Sainz all receiving sanctions during the race.
It was also a disappointing afternoon for reigning World Champion Lando Norris. The McLaren driver initially reported battery-related issues before ultimately retiring from the race.
The closing stages produced plenty of drama. On Lap 60, Lance Stroll crashed at the final corner, bringing out the Safety Car. Most drivers took advantage of the neutralisation period to make their final pit stops.
The race resumed, but the action was short-lived. Just a few laps after the restart, Charles Leclerc made a mistake at the same final corner and hit the barriers. The race was subsequently suspended with a red flag for 37 minutes.
Following the restart, the final ten laps brought no changes at the front. Antonelli retained the lead and comfortably controlled the race to the chequered flag. The victory marked his fifth consecutive triumph of the season and further extended his championship advantage.
The Italian also completed the first Grand Slam of his Formula 1 career, having taken pole position, led every lap, set the fastest lap, and won the race.
Lewis Hamilton crossed the line in second place, matching his best result of the season, while Isack Hadjar secured third, claiming his first podium finish of the current campaign and the second podium of his Formula 1 career.
The teams will return to action next weekend in Barcelona for the Spanish Grand Prix.
