Mercedes driver George Russell claimed victory at the Austrian Grand Prix, securing the seventh win of his Formula 1 career and his second of the season.
Hot weather proved to be one of the defining factors of the race weekend in Spielberg. Air temperatures remained above 30°C throughout the weekend, while track temperatures climbed close to 50°C, putting tyre wear and reliability under considerable pressure.
Mercedes set the pace for most of the weekend. Kimi Antonelli topped both Friday practice sessions before George Russell went fastest in Saturday's final practice and then claimed pole position in qualifying. The session, however, ended in dramatic fashion as Max Verstappen crashed in the closing minutes, bringing out yellow flags. Antonelli was forced to back off, while Russell managed to complete his lap and secure pole.
Russell made a clean start and held on to the lead, while Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton passed Charles Leclerc into Turn 1. On Lap 2, Verstappen overtook both Leclerc and Antonelli, but the Italian responded five laps later by reclaiming fourth place from the Ferrari driver.
The early stages of the race were highlighted by an intense battle between Hamilton and Verstappen. After exchanging positions several times, Verstappen finally got the move done on Lap 23. Hamilton later lost ground during the pit-stop phase but recovered well, overtaking his Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc to move back into the top five.
The battle intensified again in the closing stages, this time for second place. Antonelli rapidly closed the gap to Verstappen and was within attacking range on the final lap. However, Verstappen successfully defended his position to secure second place.
Out front, Russell remained in complete control and comfortably converted pole position into victory. Verstappen finished second, delivering Red Bull's 299th podium in Formula 1, while Antonelli completed the podium in third after a strong drive.
Formula 1 returns next week with the British Grand Prix at the legendary Silverstone Circuit.
