The 2026 Chinese Grand Prix at the Shanghai International Circuit delivered a historic moment as 19-year-old Kimi Antonelli secured his first Formula 1 victory, leading another strong performance for Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team.
Starting from pole position, Antonelli produced a composed drive to control the race despite early pressure from Lewis Hamilton and teammate George Russell. The Italian reclaimed the lead in the early stages and maintained his advantage throughout the race, overcoming a late-race scare to cross the finish line first and become one of the youngest winners in Formula 1 history.
Russell finished second to secure another one-two result for Mercedes, while Hamilton celebrated his first podium with Scuderia Ferrari by finishing third. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc took fourth place after an intense intra-team battle.
The race featured several dramatic moments across the field. McLaren suffered a major setback when both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri were unable to start the race due to technical issues. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen retired from the event after experiencing mechanical problems.
Further points finishes were secured by Oliver Bearman, Pierre Gasly and Liam Lawson in a race that showcased both emerging young talent and experienced drivers battling at the front.
Antonelli’s emotional maiden victory marked a major milestone for the young Italian driver and further strengthened Mercedes’ impressive start to the 2026 Formula 1 season.
