Mercedes Start the Season Strong as Russell Wins the Australian Grand Prix

The 2026 Formula 1 season began in spectacular fashion at the Albert Park Circuit with a commanding performance from George Russell, who secured victory at the 2026 Australian Grand Prix and led a dominant one-two finish for Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team. Kimi Antonelli finished second in an impressive debut performance for the team, while Charles Leclerc completed the podium for Scuderia Ferrari.

Starting from pole position, Russell converted his advantage into a strong early lead, though the opening laps delivered intense battles with Leclerc. The Ferrari driver briefly seized the lead before Russell regained control as the race unfolded. Strategic pit stop timing during Virtual Safety Car periods proved decisive, allowing the Mercedes duo to position themselves at the front of the field.

Despite late pressure from Ferrari, Russell maintained his composure to take the chequered flag and claim his sixth Formula 1 career victory. Antonelli finished just under three seconds behind his teammate, securing an outstanding second place and completing a memorable Mercedes 1–2 finish.

Ferrari’s Leclerc held off teammate Lewis Hamilton to finish third, while reigning World Champion Lando Norris crossed the line in fifth for McLaren after a solid drive. Max Verstappen recovered from the back of the grid to secure sixth place for Red Bull Racing.

Further down the order, Oliver Bearman finished seventh for Haas F1 Team, while rookie Arvid Lindblad scored points on his Formula 1 debut in eighth position. Audi also celebrated a milestone result with Gabriel Bortoleto finishing ninth in the team’s first race as a works entry.

The season-opening race delivered excitement, strategic intrigue, and a clear early statement from Mercedes as the Formula 1 championship began its global journey for 2026.
