STREET TRACK MAESTRO SERGIO PÉREZ BECOMES FIRST DOUBLE-WINNER AT THE BAKU CITY CIRCUIT

FORMULA 1 AZERBAIJAN GRAND PRIX

Red Bull Racing’s Sergio Pérez sealed a perfect weekend with a superb drive around the Baku City Circuit to take his sixth Formula 1 victory on the streets of the Azerbaijan capital.

Following his success here in 2021 Sergio broke the “Baku syndrome” by  taking his second glorious victory this year.  This means that now the Baku race has a double winner for the first time ever. With the Baku circuit bringing the Mexican driver a double dose of good luck it helped secure his victory with his triumph in the Sprint race yesterday as well. Notably, he still holds the title of the driver with the most podiums in Baku, totalling up to four.

He completed the 51-lap FORMULA 1 AZERBAIJAN GRAND PRIX 2023 just over two seconds ahead of his team-mate Max Verstappen, to give the jubilant Red Bull outfit their third 1-2 finish of the season. Firstly he didn’t damage his tyre when he grazed the wall on the entry to Turn 15 late in the race and secondly benefitted from a Safety Car intervention which helped him get ahead of his team-mate.

As the undoubted king of the streets of Baku, Pérez departs Azerbaijan having taken 33 points over the weekend to cut Verstappen’s lead at the top of the standings to just six points. Red Bull’s 1-2 finish extends their lead in the FIA Formula 1 Constructors’ World Championship to 93 points over Aston Martin which holds third place with 60 points.

With astonishing news of the contract of Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix being extended, according to the new contract, Formula 1 races are scheduled to be held in Baku until 2026.
